Calling all pharmacy owners, tutors and responsible pharmacists accountable for pharmacist’s assistants

Are you monitoring your learners to ensure they complete their qualifications on time? Your participation is of paramount importance to ensure the professional development of our learners and the running of your pharmacy establishments. We take a look at the consequences of learners who fail to complete their courses on time.

Pharmacist’s assistants registered with Council have 30 months from date of registration to complete their qualifications, failure of which Council will automatically remove such learners from the registers.

Pharmacist’s assistants learner post-basic (PALPB) who fail to complete their qualifications within the prescribed period are removed from the PALPB register and remain active as pharmacist’s assistants basic.

Tutors are expected to monitor the dates their specific learners are expected to complete their qualification. The dates may be viewed on the secure site of the website.

Learners who have been removed from Council’s register may not practise as pharmacists’ assistants unless they are still active as pharmacist’s assistants basic.

Tutors and responsible pharmacists who allow learners who are no longer registered with Council to continue practising the scope of practice will be in contravention of Rule 18 of the Rules relating to acts or omissions in respect of which Council may take disciplinary steps.

Learners erased due to failure to complete their qualification have 90 days from the date of removal to appeal against the erasure. An application for appeal, including all supporting documents as detailed in the application form, must be submitted to Council who will evaluate each case based on its merit.

Learners who meet the requirement for extension will be granted a maximum period of seven months to complete their qualifications. Learners who fail to complete their qualifications within the extended period, and those whose appeals have been declined, may apply to the Education Committee by completing an application form and paying the prescribed fee to request permission for reregistration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: These pharmacist’s assistant qualifications will be discontinued on 30 June 2018, the last enrolment date. Learners enrolled in these qualification must complete the course by 30 June 2019, which is the end of the teach-out period.
