Issuing of Primary Care Drug Therapy permits

The National Department of Health (NDoH) is processing applications for the Primary Care Drug Therapy (PCDT) permit in terms of section 22a (15) of the Medicine and Related Substances Act. The permit will allow pharmacists to diagnose and prescribe treatment in terms of PCDT.

PCDT permit holders may prescribe medicines for selected conditions identified in the Primary Healthcare (PHC) Standard Treatment Guidelines and Essential Medicine List (EML).

The application process is as follows:

  1. Register the supplementary training and/or provide proof of successful completion of the continuing professional development (CPD) workshop on PCDT with Council.
  2. Complete the applicable application form (available from the NDoH).
  3. Submit the completed application form, together with the following supporting documents, to the NDoH:
    • Proof of completion of the CPD workshop on PCDT (applicable to pharmacists who completed the workshop before February 2011)
    • Copy of the PCDT qualification (applicable to pharmacists who obtained the qualification after February 2011)
    • Proof of registration with Council.
  4. On receipt of the permit from the NDoH, record such permit with Council (at no cost).

Note: Pharmacists who successfully completed the postgraduate qualification in PCDT before2011 are required to complete a refresher course before applying for a new permit.
