The Registrar, Mr Amos Masango, calls on all pharmacists to vote in the 2018 Council Elections, reminds the profession of the importance of Pharmacy Month and invites everyone to participate in the 3rd National Pharmacy Conference in October 2019.

Council Elections 2018 – Have you voted yet?

The 2018 South African Pharmacy Council Elections are underway and the profession is called upon to vote for nine members to constitute the new Council. 72 nominees are eligible for election and it is now up to the profession to decide which nine of these nominees are best suited to represent the profession on Council for the next five years. The last day for the collection of ballots is 3 September 2018 and the closing date for ballots is 7 September 2018.

September is Pharmacy Month – Use medicines wisely

The theme of this year’s Pharmacy Month is Use Medicines Wisely. Pharmacy Month is a key time of the year to raise awareness of the pharmacy profession in the public eye. Correct use of medicines will improve the quality of health of all and it is important that the pharmacy profession actively takes part in educating the public. Minister Motsoaledi publishes Continuing Professional Development (CPD) regulations for comment

On 13 July 2018, the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, published the proposed Regulations relating to Continuing Professional Development. The proposed regulations can be viewed on the SAPC website and all written comments should be sent to the Director-General: Department of Health by 13 October 2018. Council records improved pass rates for June 2018 pre-registration examinations

In May 2018, Council conducted pre-registration examination workshops for interns nationwide. The workshops aimed to assist interns with preparation for the examinations and to provide them with information on pre-registration requirements. These workshops were well attended and their positive impact can be seen in the results of the June exams – which saw a 20% rise in the pass rate of Paper 1.

What is new in law? Legislation amendments October 2017 – July 2018

The Minimum standard for the sale of HIV self-screening test kits, Good Pharmacy Education Standards and Competency Standards for Pharmacists in South Africa were published for implementation. Regulations relating to continuing professional development were published for comment. A Board Notice regarding the revised fees payable to Council due to the increase in value-added tax was published. Rule 1.2.2 of the Rules relating to Good Pharmacy Practice has been repealed.

SAAHIP & PSSA 2018 Conferences: Council takes service delivery to the profession

The South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) was afforded the opportunity to engage with pharmacy professionals at the annual conferences of the South African Association of Hospitals and Institutional Pharmacists (SAAHIP) and the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA). The SAPC stand was a fortress of customer service and information dissemination – with delegates taking advantage of the on-site services to update details, query their statuses and enquire on various issues affecting the profession.

Impact of increased VAT on fees payable to the South African Pharmacy Council

During his Budget Speech in February 2018, the then Minister of Finance, Mr Malusi Gigaba, announced that the rate of the value-added tax (VAT) would increase from 14% to 15% effective 1 April 2018. As a result, on 23 March 2018, the South African Pharmacy Council published a Board Notice entitled “Fees Payable to the Council Under the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974, Following Adjustment in Value Added Tax (VAT)”.
