Use Medicines Wisely – Pharmacy Month Feedback - September 2018

Use Medicines Wisely – Pharmacy Month Feedback

Know your medicine – ask your pharmacist – September 2018

September 2018 marked the second celebration of Pharmacy Month in South Africa. The theme for this year’s Pharmacy Month was Use Medicines Wisely. Together with the National Department of Health and the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa, the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) went all out in promoting this campaign.

Via various methods of communication and across several channels of media, the SAPC encouraged all pharmacy professionals to take up the opportunity to engage with members of the public around the importance of responsible medicine usage and the key role pharmacists play in ensuring that medicines are used correctly.

The SAPC issued a media release at the beginning of September highlighting some of the direr facts regarding the misuse of medicines. Following this media release, the SAPC were invited to take part in several radio interviews and conversations around the wise use of medicines. The SAPC gladly welcomed these opportunities to inform the public on the theme for the month as well as the sub-themes: 1) Know your medicines; 2) Store your medicines correctly; 3) Travel safely with your medicines; and 4) Talk to your pharmacist.

Ms Jackie Maimin, Chairperson of the Practice Committee, led a town-hall meeting of the staff of Council where they were informed about Pharmacy Month and encouraged to ask questions and get involved in this initiative. This meeting proved to be very informative and educational for all.

Council would like to thank all in the profession who embraced this opportunity to advance the pharmacy profession nationwide. For a look at how the profession engaged in this campaign read the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Month Feedback article here:
