The South African Pharmacy Council congratulates the 712 Pharmacist Interns in 2022 cohort who passed the pre-registration examination. The interns achieved an 89,9% pass rate, this is slightly lower than the 2021 pass rate (93%). Three Pre-Registration Examinations were written in March (n=61), August (n=466) and October (n=265) and in total, seven hundred and ninety-two (792) interns wrote the examinations.
The pre-registration examination is a compulsory step in the registration process. As an intern you are required to sit for the practice examination to help acclimatise yourself to the online examination conditions prior to writing the pre-registration examination. To qualify for the pre-registration examination, a Pharmacist Intern should have completed a minimum of five (5) months of the internship and have submitted at least six (6) CPD entries and be competent in three CPD entries by the time of the examination booking. Interns should also ensure that there are three (3) favourable progress reports submitted by their tutor so that they can write the exam.
The results of the 2022 Pre-Registration Examination are provided in Table 1 below.
Across all examination sittings during 2022, most of the Pharmacist Interns who failed the examination appeared to have struggled with the Calculations section. A larger number of Pharmacist Interns sat for the August examination (466) and the overall pass rate for August was 92,9% (including condonations). The examination in October had the second highest number of candidates (265), and had the second highest pass rate at 86,8%. The March examination had the lowest number of candidates (61) attempting the examination, and the lowest pass rate of the three examinations undertaken throughout the year at 80,3%. There were eighty (80) unsuccessful attempts at the examination by Pharmacist Interns throughout the three exam sittings.
Pharmacist Interns repeating the examination are required to complete both sections of the examination regardless of their success in either the calculations or general sections in their previous attempt.
We wish the Pharmacist Interns that are reattempting the examination in March 2023 success. These interns may find the Intern and Tutor Manual (click here to download) and the various lectures on calculations and other questions (click here to watch) in the General section useful as they prepare to reattempt the examination.
