2023 Council Election Results

The South African Pharmacy Council is a statutory regulatory body established in terms of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974. The Council exists to regulate the pharmacy profession in South Africa. As per the Act, the Council is made up of 25 members. These members sit for a term of office of five years at a time. The current Council’s term ends on 31 December 2023.

The South African Pharmacy Council is a statutory regulatory body established in terms of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974. The Council exists to regulate the pharmacy profession in South Africa. As per the Act, the Council is made up of 25 members. Nine of these members are elected by the profession in terms of Section 5(1)(a) of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974.

The 2023 Council Elections were conducted between 8 August 2023 and 16 October 2023, comprising two phases, comprising the nominations phase, which took place between 8 August and 8 September 2023, the result of which was the nomination of 161 pharmacists; and the voting/ballot casting phase, which took place between Friday, 13 October and Monday, 16 October 2023. Wherein 7 062 pharmacists of the 18 205 pharmacists eligible for voting voted, indicating a 38,79% voter-turnout/participation rate.

The Returning Officer hereby, in terms of Regulations 8(3) and 8(4) of the Regulations relating to the election of members of the South African Pharmacy Council, announces the nine members elected by the profession during the 2023 Council Elections.
